Stormwater Management and Water Efficient Landscaping
Two large bioretention areas totaling 8,600 square feet, a 13,000 square foot native prairie restoration area, and 1,000 square feet of porous asphalt were constructed to handle runoff. Only local, indigenous plants were used for landscaping, eliminating the need for mowing, and sprinkling or chemical fertilizers. Rain barrels capture rainwater for reuse through hand watering. Overflow is directed through swales (grassed channels that act like filters of pollutants) and into the bioretention areas.
Estimated Savings: $175,000 over a ten-year period
